The IMPOincludes three master-doctor degree granting programs: Petrology and Ore deposit Geology, Material and Environmental Mineralogy, and Petroleum Geology. There are 20 academic stuffs in the institute, involving one academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Danian, Ye), one academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering (Yongsheng, Ma), one Cheung Kong Chair Professor (Lifei, Zhang), four winners of National Outstanding Youth Fund (Lifei Zhang, Yanjing Chen, Chunjing Wei, Shuguang Song), and two chiefs of ‘973’ projects of the Ministry and Science and Technology (Anhuai Lu, Yanjing Chen). The group of Metamorphism and Crustal Evolution had been founded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China as a Distinguished Innovative Research Group during 2008-2014. Each year, the IMPO obtains research funding over thirty million RMB, publishes more than 200 academic papers, and accepts more than 30 postgraduates for doctor and master degrees.

The IMPO also owns advanced instruments, including high-resolution multi-collector plasma mass spectrometry, X-ray electron probe micro-analyzer, Scanning Wavelength Dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, Standard full-time automatic high-precision Laser Microprobe Dating System, Laser Corrosion and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry and other large equipments, as well as the different levels of ultra-clean laboratories, Laser Spectroscopy Laboratory, and Microscope teaching laboratory.
